Why Football is better than Cricket
10:23
I woke up on the bright sunday morning looking forward for the biggest match in the world of cricket. As a neutral fan, I wanted a close game, neck-neck. Because, what's the point of one sided games? One sided games are boring as well as they don't advertise that particular sport well either.
I was having discussion with my friends who were suggesting that Cricket is a better sport than Football, because in Football, teams score goals once in 60 minutes or they don't score at all, whereas in Cricket, you get to enjoy lot of 4's and 6's. In response, I suggested that Football is better than Cricket because
1) In Football, the weak can resist the strong.
2) The big matches are closely fought in Football than in Cricket.

Last 5 World Cup stats : Cricket and Football
If you look at Cricket, Australia have won 4 times in the last 5 occasions. That's ridiculous. And if you look at it closely, Australia have ripped apart their opposition in at least 3 world cup finals. On the other hand, Football has produced 5 different winners in 5 occasions. All the three FIFA world cup finals went to extra time and any team could have won it.
Today, almost 80% knew before hand that Aussies would win. But I had a hope, a hope that, for once, the weak will resist the strong. Today, I wanted to stand on my toes biting my nails in apprehension, but that moment never came, may be because Cricket isn't after all a great sport, may be because Cricket is just for strong teams. It's a good thing that only 10 teams are playing next cricket world cup. Because, Australia may win it again no matter how many teams contest.
Football provides the stage for a weaker teams, a chance to win it against all odds which makes it a great sport unlike Cricket, which is inherently flawed.
In Football, much weaker teams have won the tournament. Greece, for example won the 2004 EURO against all the odds. Italy won the world cup in the
similar fashion 2 years later. Also, people can always say, "Hey, why you are comparing two sports, Aussies are just better, not much any team can do".
For them I'd say this : Spain won 2008 EURO, 2010 World Cup and 2012 EURO by thrashing all teams which come in their way. They were a dominant force, but other teams didn't just accept the defeat, but they had a proper plan. Let’s take Germany for instance, they always fell short in big occasions(THEY CHOKED). They lost to Brazil in 2002 world cup final, came 3rd in 2006 and 2010 world cup editions. But they didn't gave up, rather they had a plan : Germany invested a lot in youth development, developed a proper playing style. At the end, they did not have Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo on their side, but they had a team which could win anything. In Cricket, that is missing. Australia and India will continue to dominate the cricket for years to come. The financial disparity will help them. BCCI will continue to be the biggest cricketing board. But what measures the other teams say, South Africa , West Indies and England will take from this world cup defeat? Will they prepare a plan to resist the strong? Only time will tell.
Many Indian youth favor football over cricket. Because, in Football we get to see underdogs winning against all the odds. People love underdogs. Why? Psychologists consistently find that people get more joy out of unexpected success than expected ones.

Today, a billion people supported Newzealand(underdogs), but there was absolutely no upset on cards, thus no pleasure derived from the biggest match of the cricket. But, when Atletico Madrid(underdogs) beat great Barcelona and Real Madrid to the 2013-14 La Liga, the joy derived out of it cannot be described in words. Not only Atletico Madrid, Liverpool , Borussia Dortmund, and Chelsea all have won major tournaments with much weaker side. Nobody anticipated their victory, but when they won, strong men have broken down in tears. That’s missing in Cricket. I wanted South Africa or Newzealand to win the world cup, just to change that aspect of game(Cricket), but that did not happen. Any statistician will say you that better team will win it most of the times, but the sport which provides the chance for weak teams to triumph over the strong makes it a great sport.
