Athletic Bilbao 4 Barcelona 0 | Sh**t happens
21:47
Athletic Bilbao thrashed Barcelona in the first leg of spanish super cup at San Mames with an emphatic 4-0 victory.
Barcelona played their second game in the span of 3 days hence the boss had to tweak the lineup. Away game at San Mames was always going to be tough, but the 1-0 scoreline suddenly turned into a debacle by the end of 90 minutes. Well that's when we say
It is strictly advisable to the fellow cules not to read too much into things that followed at San Mames. If he have to lose one trophy in the year, that would be this one. It was quite evident from the starting line up that we were literally playing the second string (Defense and Midfield) on the field/position.
The first goal was a result of howler committed by Ter Stegen who was supposedly inspired by Manuel Neur. 1-0 away in two legged tie, that too when the second leg at Camp Nou is always a good result, but the insipid performance that followed in the second half means, there is very little chance to turn the tables tonight at Camp Nou.
Ahead of the match, Luis Enrique talked to the press about how difficult it is to turn the tie.
“The comeback is a challenge that is within the team’s capabilities. It would be arrogant to say we will do it but we will try sure.”
“The stimulus is to do something that no-one has done before, that’s how difficult it is. We will try to give Barça fans a great night.”
“Last season we scored 4 or mor goals in 18 matches. We will be fresher than in the first leg and when Barça plays, anything can happen.”
“It will be difficult. We are in a situation in which we cannot concede goals. We have to score more than 4 but also keep a clean sheet. If they score we will have to score six, and that is a big ask.”
“We were not at our best [in the first leg]. The mistakes were by the whole team, just as the victories are.” [Source]
In the recent memory, Barcelona have turned around 2-0 deficit against AC Milan with a memorable 4-0 at Camp Nou in 2012-13 season. It will be a night to remember if we will be able to replicate that performance tonight.
